July: The Hebrew Bible

Е-мейл Печат ПДФ

The BibleDear Friends,
I am glad to hear the enthusiastic feedback about the course of “The History of World Literature” that we have started.  For all parents who feel their children would benefit from attending our meetings, please feel free to bring them along.  Inquisitive young minds are always very welcome.
For all of you who are traveling away on vacation and are unable to join us, I plan to have a remedial session sometime in September to help everyone interested to catch up with the course.
The theme of our July meeting is:  “The Hebrew Bible” – lecture number three from the course.

"The Hebrew  Bible" is one of the most important books in history, both for literature and for culture.  For centuries, all writers within the Judeo-Christian culture wrote either consciously or unconsciously within its framework.  The lecture will also focus on the art of the Biblical Narrative, which has become a formative story for all of subsequent Western literature.

Our July meeting will take place on
Friday, July 24, 2009; 7 p.m.
in Tierrasanta “Diana” Clubhouse.
5844 Menorca Drive, San Diego, CA 92124.

See you all there!

Dear Friends,

Our April meeting will be remembered with the lively, lengthy and passionate discussion of Kapka Kassabova’s immigration story “Street without a Name”, which made us all compare notes, share personal experiences and voice mixed opinions about life in Bulgaria before and after the Communism collapsed.  Kudos goes to our teenage guests Lea and Hrissie for their sincere remarks, sharp observations, and contagious patriotism.  Bravo, young Californian-Bulgarians!

June: The History of the World Literature

Е-мейл Печат ПДФ

Dear Friends,
The June meeting of our literary circle will take place as planned on

Friday, June 19, 2009; 7 p.m.
in Tierrasanta “Diana” Clubhouse.
5844 Menorca Drive, San Diego, CA 92124.

I apologize for the late announcement, but I finally received from the Teaching Company a set of DVD’s from their series The Great Courses: Literature & English Language which I bought for our circle.  Last night I watched a few lectures from the “History of the World Literature” to sample the course and can’t wait to share with you the pleasure.
Scope:  “The History of the World Literature" explores cross-cultural themes, techniques, and modes of representation over nearly 5,000 years of history.  The focus of the individual lectures is on themes as they are repeated, echoed, and modified through time, but the unifying thread for the course as a whole is the evolution of storytelling.”
We will begin our study of world literature with the Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh – one of the oldest literary works in the world, which has become a template for much of the literature that follows.
